Net Zero Lawyers Alliance Ltd ("NZLA") is committed to respecting and protecting your privacy. For the purposes of data protection and applicable data privacy laws, NZLA is a data 'controller' in respect of your personal data. We are responsible for ensuring that we hold and use your personal data in accordance with applicable data privacy laws.

This Privacy Statement sets out the basis on which any personal data we collect from you, or that you provide to us, will be processed by us.

NZLA controls the collection and processing of any personal data that you provide or that we collect from you in relation to NZLA events, projects, membership arrangements or any other opportunities to collaborate or work with NZLA ("Products and Services"). NZLA also controls the collection and processing of any personal data that you provide to us, or that we collect about you, in relation to the NZLA website (the "Website").  

Please read this Privacy Statement carefully before using or submitting information to the Website to understand our views and practices regarding your personal data and how we will treat it If you do not agree with the terms of this privacy statement, please do not access the Website.

Personal data that we collect from you

"Personal data" is any information that relates to you personally and that identifies you either directly from that information or indirectly, by reference to other information that we have access to. The personal data that we collect, and how we collect it, depends upon how you interact with us.

  • We collect personal data that you provide to us directly, such as when you contact us via our "contact" form on the Website, register to attend our events or meetings, subscribe to (and interact with us as part of) our membership, apply for a job with us, or express interest in supporting our projects. This will include your name, surname, email address, company organisation name and any other information you decide to share with us.
  • Our servers also automatically collect certain information when you access our Website. This includes your IP address, your browser type, your operating system, your access times, and the pages you have viewed directly before and after accessing the Website. If you are using mobile, this information may also include your device name and type, your operating system, your country, your likes and replies to a post, and other interactions.
Personal data we collect from third parties

In some circumstances we may also receive information from:

  • regulatory bodies;
  • third-party sites or platforms, such as social media sites;
  • other companies or law firms providing services to us;
  • the organisation that you represent; and
  • publicly available sources of information.
How we use your personal data

Our use of your personal data depends on how and where you interact with us. See Appendix 1 below for a list of our purposes of processing and the lawful basis on which such processing relies.

Sharing and transferring your data

1. We treat your personal data with respect and do not share it with third parties except as described below:

  • We may share personal data or contact lists with our suppliers and service providers including event organisers and partners, legal or actuarial. Contact lists are used only for the purposes of inviting individuals to events, or sending reports and newsletters and are not used for any other purpose;
  • We may delegate the processing of your personal data to IT service providers acting as processors, located within the UK / EEA, or if outside the UK / EEA, in accordance with (2) below, or with selected third parties that assist us in the hosting, support, improvement and optimisation of the Website;
  • We may share personal information when necessary with law enforcement and regulatory authorities.
  • Some employee data is shared with our accountants, payroll consultants, and human resources consultants where necessary. In each case, their respective data protection policies have each been reviewed and are maintained on file.  

2. We will only transfer your personal data outside of the European region under the following circumstances:

  • where the transfer is to a country or other territory which has been assessed by the European Commission (or an equivalent UK body) as ensuring an adequate level of protection for personal data; or
  • on the basis that the transfer is compliant with applicable data privacy laws and that the appropriate safeguards are in place.

We maintain appropriate technical and organisational security measures to protect the personal data we collect against any unauthorised or unlawful processing and against any accidental loss, destruction, or damage.

We do not keep your personal data for any longer than is necessary to fulfil the purpose for which we processed it.

You have certain rights regarding how we use and keep your personal data. These include:

  • you can require us, to update or correct any inaccurate personal data, or to complete any incomplete personal data, concerning you. If you do, we will take reasonable steps to check the accuracy of such information. Please let us know if any of your information changes so that we can keep it accurate and up to date;
  • you can require us to stop processing your information;
  • You can withdraw your consent (where we process your personal data on the basis of your consent). If you withdraw your consent, we may not be able to provide certain Products or services to you; and
  • you have the right to object to our use of your personal data more generally.

You may also have the right, in certain circumstances to:

  • be provided with a copy of any personal data that we hold about you, with certain related information regarding the nature, processing and disclosure of such personal data. There are exceptions to this right; for example where information is legally privileged or if providing you with the information would reveal personal data about another person;
  • to require us, without undue delay, to delete your personal data;
  • to "restrict" our use of your information, so that it can only continue subject to restrictions;
  • to request not to be subject to automated decision-making (if any personal data which you have provided to us is processed using automated means) which can have a legal or similarly significant effect on you; and
  • to require the transfer of your personal data to you or to a new service provider in a structured, machine-readable format.

You can also lodge a complaint about our processing of your personal data with the body regulating data protection in your country, where you live or work, or the location where the data protection issue arose. You can exercise the above rights, where applicable by contacting us at info@netzerolawyers.com. We will require you to provide satisfactory proof of your identity in order to ensure that your rights are respected and that your personal data is disclosed only to you.

We may make changes to this Privacy Statement. We will alert you about any changes by updating the "Last Updated" date of this Privacy Statement.

Uses of personal data

To provide news and information services including email briefings and newsletters; to give access to online tools and to invite you to events that we and our partners organise.

To send you details of surveys, projects / "Accelerator Groups", pro-bono requests or other initiatives that we co-ordinate.

To operate suppression lists to ensure that you do not receive communications if you object or unsubscribe.

To collect insights into how you interact with our Website, Products and Services so that we can:  

(i) personalise our communications with you and improve our Products and Services; and  

(ii) maintain and enhance the quality of the Website.

To maintain contact with past employees and other alumni to promote networking and communication with and between the NZLA and its former employees

To manage our supply chain including identifying and maintaining contact with service providers.

To provide user support for our Products and Services and to enhance the user experience.

To support our partners who have expressed interest in supporting our pro-bono requests and projects
