About the Net Zero Lawyers Alliance (NZLA):

The Net Zero Lawyers Alliance (NZLA) was established ahead of COP26 to mobilise commercial law firms, lawyers, and the law to accelerate the transition to net zero. NZLA plays a pivotal role in positioning commercial lawyers to help reduce emissions, manage climate risk, and align with global climate targets.

Role Overview

We are seeking a strategic and delivery-focused Senior Lawyer to work across its full operating model, supporting the identification, development, and application of high-impact legal initiatives that contribute to the transition to net zero.

This is a generalist role suited to a lawyer who is comfortable working across multiple workstreams, engaging a wide range of stakeholders, and connecting ideas, people, and projects.

This role will:

• Work closely with members and partners to identify and shape high-impact areas of work through horizon scanning and stakeholder engagement  

• Encourage meaningful member participation and contribution across NZLA’s initiatives  

• Support the translation of NZLA’s outputs into practical use and influence across the legal ecosystem  

• Build and manage a high-quality, mission-aligned partnership network

This is a cross-cutting role combining strategy, relationship management, and delivery.

Key Responsibilities

1. Engagement and Collaboration Across Membership and Partners

• Build and maintain strong working relationships with NZLA members and partners across legal, academic, NGO, multilateral, and financial sectors  

• Engage membership and encourage active participation in NZLA’s initiatives, including committees and collaborative projects  

• Identify alignment between stakeholder interests, expertise, and NZLA priorities, helping to connect the right people to the right work  

• Monitor and assess engagement levels and relationship effectiveness, ensuring sustained and meaningful involvement

2. Horizon Scanning and Initiative Development

• Work with partners and members to conduct horizon scanning, identifying emerging legal barriers and opportunities related to the net zero transition  

• Translate insights into clearly defined areas of work or project opportunities for further development  

• Facilitate early-stage engagement to bring together interested stakeholders and form committees or working groups  

3. Uptake, Application and Impact

• Support the positioning of NZLA outputs to member firms and other key stakeholders.

• Help identify appropriate audiences and pathways to ensure outputs are visible, relevant, and practically useful  

• Contribute to the development of approaches to track engagement, usage, and broader influence  

• Support the production of clear and accessible insights and outputs that reflect the impact of NZLA’s work

Key Skills and Experience

• Qualified lawyer with experience in a commercial law firm or legal-adjacent environment  

• Broad interest in climate, sustainability, and the net zero transition, with the ability to engage across a range of topics  

• Ability to operate as a generalist across multiple workstreams, bringing structure and clarity to complex or evolving areas  

• Comfortable working at both strategic and delivery levels, with a proactive and solutions-oriented approach
